Helping Honda turn future uncertainty into strategic direction
Hybrid Harmonious Society 2050 was a participatory futures study that translated interdisciplinary perspectives into scenarios and strategic opportunity areas for Honda.

How might Honda contribute to a future society where people, technology, and nature coexist responsibly, without prescribing a single technological future?

Bubble size represents the relative frequency with which each quality appeared across interviews and workshop materials. The visualization was used as directional qualitative evidence, not as a quantitative measurement of brand perception.
Three signals shaping Honda’s future opportunities

The project treated 2050 as a space for organizational learning, not as a prediction exercise.
Social × Geographic Scenario Landscape
32 future scenarios mapped across social levels and geographic scales. The matrix prevented the portfolio from collapsing into only individual-product futures or only global abstractions.
Speculative films
The project used different narrative forms for cultural provocation and internal strategic reflection.

Strategic perspective for Honda
The internal film translated selected scenarios into a concise narrative for the Honda Global Board.
The question became less “What technology can Honda build?” and more “What relationships should Honda enable?”
18 ways people, technology and nature might coexist

Shared framework Honda could use to guide future research across people, technology, and nature.

The gigamap connects research inputs, 70+ future stories, themes, selected scenarios, opportunity areas, and two films, allowing leaders to trace each strategic direction back to evidence.
Organizational Impact
The scenarios helped move an expansive philosophical question into concrete organizational conversations, follow-on research, and future innovation planning.
Scenarios selected
A broad portfolio was narrowed into coherent stories suitable for discussion and strategic storytelling.
Leadership dialogue
Presented to HRI’s global CEO and Japan leadership team, the scenarios became a reference point for subsequent discussions about future-ready innovation ecosystems.
Follow-on foresight work
The frameworks informed new initiatives, including adapting participatory futuring activities for younger participants.
Innovation-ecosystem planning
The research contributed to continued work with Ohio State’s Center for Innovation Strategies on future-ready organizational models.
Research Design
Each phase deliberately narrowed a broad question into evidence, scenarios, organizational dialogue, and communicable futures.

Methods
Semi-structured expert interviews, participatory foresight, co-design, synthesis, scenario planning, strategic storytelling
Guiding Questions
- What does societal harmony mean when human, ecological, and technological systems become increasingly interdependent?
- How might AI, mobility, and nature-based systems support human and ecological agency rather than undermine it?
- What capabilities and relationships might organizations need in an operating context defined by rapid change and system interdependence?
